A thoughtful alternative to Istanbul’s large-scale developments, this micro-structured transfer center prioritizes human flow, green preservation, and public access to the seaside.
Type: Urban Design / Transit Infrastructure
Project Title: Kabataş Transfer Center
Location: Istanbul, Turkey
Project Description
Located in Kabataş, Istanbul, this project reimagines the role of transit infrastructure within a densely trafficked urban environment. The area is a major transport hub, linking ferry piers, metro, tram, and bus lines—while also sitting close to workplaces, schools, historic landmarks, and a nearby stadium. This convergence leads to high volumes of human and vehicle movement, involving everyone from students and commuters to tourists and local residents.
Designed as an alternative to the mega-scale Kabataş Martı Project, this proposal favors a more human-scaled approach. Rather than building a dominant structure along the coast, Ceren Kocaslan introduces a micro-structured transfer center composed of small, modular units that seamlessly respond to the needs of various users.
A key design goal was to preserve the green spaces and open the seaside to public use, minimizing structural dominance and maximizing public accessibility. To address the site's current chaotic circulation, the project widens roads and pedestrian paths, ensuring smoother transitions across modes of transport.
This design offers a more adaptable, inclusive, and environmentally conscious alternative—serving functionality while respecting urban and ecological contexts.
